Stellantis, the global automaker formed by the merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA Group, has announced a new platform for its upcoming electric vehicles. The platform, called STLA Large, is designed to offer a range of 800 km (500 miles) on a single charge, as well as fast charging, high performance, and off-road capabilities.
What is the STLA Large platform?
The STLA Large platform is one of the four battery electric vehicle (BEV) platforms that Stellantis revealed on its EV Day 2021. The other three are STLA Small, STLA Medium, and STEV, which cover different segments and markets. The STLA Large platform is the most flexible and versatile platform, as it can underpin various types of vehicles in the D and E segments, from cars to crossovers to SUVs.
According to Stellantis, STLA Large enables several segment-leading features, such as:
- Embedded energy: The platform can accommodate a battery pack of up to 118 kWh, which is enough to provide a range of 800 km (500 miles) for sedans. The platform is also engineered to accept future energy storage technologies, such as solid-state batteries when they become available.
- Charging efficiency: The platform supports both 400-volt and 800-volt BEV architectures, which means it can use different types of chargers. The platform can achieve a charging efficiency of 4.5 kWh per minute, which translates to adding 100 km (62 miles) of range in about 10 minutes.
- Performance: The platform can deliver impressive acceleration and speed thanks to its powerful electric motors and advanced power electronics. The platform can achieve 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in the 2-second range and a top speed of over 300 km/h (186 mph).
- Off-road capability: The platform can also support Trail Rated off-road driving, a Jeep brand trademark. The platform can offer features such as torque vectoring, air suspension, and four-wheel drive to enhance the vehicles' traction, ground clearance, and maneuverability.
